Accident 6/8/04

Driving home in a blinding Florida thunderstorm. On the highway, driving around 50 mph. Changed lanes, hit monster puddle, lost front end, rear tires spun, lost rear. Drifted lanes, but managed not to hit the person next to me. Finally spun off road sideways. Hit utility pole, and spun into a ditch. Missed a 10 foot tall drainage culvert by about 5 feet. The culvert would have flipped the truck into a deep drainage ditch. A few more feet on the other side, and I would have spun into the woods and flipped into trees. Lucky, I guess. Over 3 grand of damage.

Door is toast, side view gone, glass got nicked as the mirror was crushed. The sidestep is bent beyond repair
Frame seems OK, but the cab will need realignment as the hood and bed are slightly off
Most of the heavy impact was at the sidestep. It snapped the pole and kept the truck from flipping
Most of the body damage was at the door. Front fender will need some work.
First steps on the road to Wellville. The brushguard has to come off, so the lights have to go first
Next comes the 4 bolts that hold the brushguard to the frame brackets. I left the brackets attached, so it was easy to remove the guard
Lights and brushguard are off the truck. Since I had to cut the wires for the lights; I added connectors. This will make it easy to remove them later
I decided to remove my USF tag, since I want a new one anyway. The truck now looks like it did when I purchased it (except for the big ol dent)
Next I removed the damaged sidestep. The brackets and cab bolts where bent, so the shop will replace them
The left sidestep was also removed, since I'm replacing both with chromed ones. The stainless ones are no longer available.
The brushguard and new sidesteps fit nicely in the bed. The shop will also paint the brushguard, as it's paint has faded badly
In the shop. Door off, fender off, working on the damaged door sill and A pillar
The shop says they can fix the sill, so they won't have to cut it off the truck. This will save time and negate the need to cut and weld on the body
Another shot of the work being done on the door sill
This picture shows that it's impossible to put a power antenna on a Ranger. The pinch welds all meet in the antenna area. The tiny door is access for the antenna cable.
Headlights are off, so are the side lights, brushguard, off-road lights, inner fender liner, fender and door
In order to realign the bed, a few parts had to come off. Here's the truck without the tailgate, bed cover, bedliner, and rear bumper
Fender and door after fixing and repainting
New door after paint. Still need to reinstall the trim and new mirror. The lower sill was fixed, textured, and repainted
Fender flares, XLT badge, and door guts come next. The frame was measured perfect, and wasn't damaged in the impact
Bedliner and bed bolts are removed so the bed can be aligned properly. Ford did a bad job at initially lining up my truck bed
Door is just the skin, so it can be properly painted. Next comes all the interior parts, glass and trim
Once the glass and door parts are back in, the truck goes to the tint shop. After that, it's buffed and all the accessories go back on
Back from the shop with new door, mirror, and fixed body work. Paint looks perfect! Great job by Beto's Custom in Tampa
I had the shop paint the fold-a-cover silver. I also had them paint the front brushguard a gloss black
